The gateway to the desert

On the other side of the High Atlas begins the Morocco of kasbahs: adobe villages, palm groves and reddish mountains. Ouarzazate and the nearby ksar of Aït Ben Haddou are the first big stop on almost every trip from Marrakech to the desert.

How to get there

Ouarzazate is about 4 hours from Marrakech over the Tichka pass. You can visit Aït Ben Haddou on a day trip, but it is best included in a tour of 3 days or more towards Merzouga or Zagora.
