Morocco’s spiritual capital
Fez is the oldest of the imperial cities. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a car-free maze of thousands of lanes where life goes on as it did centuries ago: craftsmen, markets, fountains and mosques.
What to see in Fez
- Chouara Tannery, with its colourful dye pits seen from the terraces.
- Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas, masterpieces of carved wood and stucco.
- Al Quaraouiyine University, considered one of the oldest in the world.
- Blue Gate (Bab Bou Jeloud), the most famous entrance to the medina.
- The Jewish quarter (Mellah) and the Royal Palace.
- Sunset views from the Marinid Tombs.
Tips
The medina is easy to get lost in, so it is worth visiting with a local guide. Fez is the perfect starting point for the Merzouga desert (about 470 km across the Middle Atlas, the cedar forests of Ifrane and the Ziz Valley) or for Chefchaouen, about 3–4 hours away.
